Here is a list of interesting movie predictions for 2011 supplied by Pendfieldpost commenting that this year’s movie trend will provide stronger entertainment and box office revenues for movie goers and studios. Last year’s crop of flicks failed to attract much rapport with big names like “Iron Man 2,” “Inception” and “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” failed to show impact though having their fair share of business, but those hits came few and far between. While remaining optimistic, this year is a fine year ro redeem yourself from last years flop notably, the top 5 list begins with:
There are several films that will be compete for the top spot of the summer, but the obnoxiously loud “Transformers” series will prevail. The previous two films set box office records, and I do not foresee fans of the franchise ignoring round three. Release date: Friday, July 29
2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 2
The final chapter of Harry Potter does not need 3-D upgrades to boost ticket prices, because the boy wizard does well all on his own. This is the second part of the final installment, and all of Potter’s fans will support him in his final film. Release date: Friday, July 15
3. Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides
The fourth Pirates will be the first bona fide hit of the summer. Johnny Depp’s characterization of Captain Jack Sparrow is good enough to keep bringing audiences back. Release date: Friday, May 20
4. Kung Fu Panda 2
Competing with the “Hangover” sequel in terms of release date, “Kung Fu Panda 2” will be the first family-friendly film to be released this summer. The first one was wildly successful and the second one will be out just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Release date: Thursday, May 26
5. Cars 2
The first “Cars” made $600 million plus worldwide and anything that comes from the Pixar factory of animation is bound to be a smash. This will be the second family hit of the summer, and comes out deep into June, so families will be looking for something else to see. Release date: Friday, June 24
Bottom 5 films
Like any movie season, there are bound to be films that bomb. These are the five films I feel will not live up to expectations.
1. The Hangover, Part 2
Crazy, right? The first “Hangover” film made over $200 million, which no one would have predicted from a genre picture. I do have a feeling that in a few weeks when the second film is released, lightning will not strike twice. It just may suffer the curse of the “Sex and the City” sequel. Release date: Thursday, May 26
2. Larry Crowne
The Tom Hanks directed comedy looks bland and may fall flat at the box office. Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks will win over some audiences, but I am afraid it will get lost in the “Transformers” release shuffle. Despite its well intentions, Larry Crowne just might not make the summer cut. Release date: Friday, July 1
3. The Smurfs
There does not seem to be as strong of an attraction factor for younger kids, and the previews do not make this 3-D animated film look like anything special. With “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Cars 2” and even the new “Winnie the Pooh film,” families will have plenty to choose from and “The Smurfs” might just get passed over. Release date: Friday, July 29
4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Most movies released in August never seem to perform well, and there already has been so many remakes of “The Planet of the Apes” that this film seems a tad unnecessary. Release date: Friday, August 5
5. Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World
Movie studios must always think they have a hit with family movies, but “Spy Kids 4” just isn’t going to be one. The first film was original and fun, but like most franchises, a fourth film always feels tired. Release date: Friday, August 19
As for surprises of the summer, I am predicting that the surprise hit of the summer will be “Super 8.” Movies with J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg’s names attached always seem to do just fine, and the ambiguity of the plot and name of “Super 8” will add to its success. (Could “Bad Teacher” or “Friends With Benefits” be the surprise comedy hit of the summer?) So, go outside and enjoy the warm sun then get to the movies!
