Optimus and Megatron will be rocking and socking on the 3DS. Slow motion explosions, racial stereotypes and humping dogs to follow. It was only a matter of time before a movie-based 3DS game was revealed. That time is now, and that franchise is The Transformers.
During toymaker Hasbro’s Investors’ Day, the company announced their plans for more video games based on the hugely popular Transformers license. These plans include a game adaptation based on the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Dark of the Moon is the third film from Michael Bay’s highly-profitable series based on the unending war between the Autobots and the Decepticons.
In addition PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC, Dark of the Moon will also see a release on Nintendo 3DS, making it the first movie-game announced for the 3D handheld.
While many games based on films tend to weigh largely on the negative side of quality, Transformers’ 3DS debut could have one thing going for it; 3D movie footage. While it hasn’t been confirmed whether the game will feature actual footage from the movie, doing so could make use of the system’s 3D screens.
This would deliver the kind of visual experience which usually require a steep price for watching the film on IMAX. Of course, gamers would end up paying more for the game, a value that will be determined whether it can deliver a gameplay experience far better than its predecessors.
Given the history of the series, as well as movie games in general, fans may be better off keeping an eye at the sequel to War for Cybertron, which was also announced at the same time, but not for the 3DS.
