As 2010 is close to the end, more news out regarding the most expensive Masterpiece of all time, the MP-09 Rodimus Convoy action figure from Takara Tomy. Japanese members from the US board has begin posting official images of the figure.
Although the images are quite scarce, at least most of us do get some views of the fully painted figure from all angles as well as both of the alternate modes. The post also discloses the release month to be January 2011 with no actual date given.
So what actually MP-09 contain? First of all it transformers into well, we all know the infamous cybertronian truck cab and futuristic trailer. Not to mention an awesome mobile defense bay with photon eliminator. It also comes with two photon lasers, matrix of leadership, a buzzsaw and heck, a welding torch.
The best part in MP-09 is he can transform into his youthful self – Hot Rod incarnation in both vehice and robot mode (wow), and also the standard Rodimus Convoy with robot mode and alternate mode. Whilst in Hot Rod, he has shorter height with a youthful face.
In Rodimus Convoy, the height is due to his elongated thighs. As for the face, it comes with a face swapping gimmick.
If you think Rodimus Convoy is just a Hot Rod car tucked to his trailer than you are wrong! It is entirely new vehicle front end to represent Rodimus Prime’s shorter hood, smaller windshield/canopy and lack of exposed engine block. The third mode is called the Mobile Defense Bay transformed from the trailer.

Armed with Photon Eliminator rifle, it can split into Hot Rod’s two smaller Photon Laser weapons which is a decent downgrade according to his youthful self. The Matrix are part of the package to re-enact the scene of Transformers: The Movie scene if you wish. The coolest part is, is not something that Takara took from MP Optimus Prime and repackage with Rodimus, but it is a whole new item.
The Transformers: The Movie was indeed the source of inspiration for the rest of his additional gadgets and features such as a retractable visor from the Lookout Mountain scene, the buzzsaw used in battle on Quintessa, and the welding torch he used to repair Kup, both of which attach to his forearms. How cool is that?
Keep your eyes peeled for January 2011!!
