He easily could have been at fault, because he WAS driving his Ford F-150 pick-up while schnockered at 3 a.m., with a passenger in the person of 23-year-old co-star Isabel Lucas, who also happens to be Adrian Grenier's ("Entourage") girlfriend. Scandal! Lucas was unhurt, and LaBeouf has hospitalized for hand surgery.
The official story: Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says detectives have determined that the other driver, who has not been identified, ran the light and will also be cited. LaBeouf was booked for a misdemeanor DUI and underwent surgery for injuries to his left hand.
"He was not at fault," Whitmore said of the "Transformers" actor.
Lucas, who has not yet appeared in any American films but has several upcoming projects, has returned to production on "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," which is due out next June, the person said. Melissa Kates, a publicist for LaBeouf, said he plans to return to work within a month.
LaBeouf was trying to make a left turn at the West Hollywood intersection of LaBrea and Fountain avenues when his pickup collided with another vehicle, rolling the truck over.
"It was immediately apparent to officers responding on the scene that LaBeouf was intoxicated and he was subsequently placed under arrest," Sgt. Scott Wolf said on Sunday.
