Early this year, he broke away from mainstream English hits to release Anbe (My Love), his first Tamil single.
He shares with us his thoughts on movies.
What’s the latest movie you’ve watched? I just caught Alice In Wonderland last week. I didn’t watch it in 3D though — after seeing Avatar in 3D, I decided I needed some space between the screen and where I’m sitting.
What do you think of the film? Well, we all grew up reading Alice In Wonderland, and I thought Tim Burton’s deviation from the original concept was amazing.
I watched it mainly for Johnny Depp — I’m a huge fan. My favourite part was the Futterwacking dance the Mad Hatter did after the Red Queen was overthrown. The tea party scene, a significant part of the original story, was also depicted humorously. It was so old-school, how he tried to hide Alice in the teapot.
What’s your all-time favourite movie? Transformers, definitely. I watched the cartoon in the 1980s and that was just a simple expression of art, watching the robots being transformed into vehicles.
The personalities of the robot were what carried the cartoon, and the 2007 movie exemplified that when it brought the characters to life. It’s not easy to transpire human emotions on machines, but Michael Bay gave them such strong individual personalities that it was easy to connect with them. Look at Bumblebee — you felt for him when he cried, and cheered with him when he was happy.
If you could play any character in any movie, who would you play and why? I would want to play Captain Stringfellow Hawke from Airwolf. Airwolf is a TV series about a hi-tech military helicopter and its crew, and Hawke is the man on the show. They should turn it into a movie.
Are there any movies you’re looking forward to? The remake of The Karate Kid, featuring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s son). The Karate Kid series has always been associated with Mr Miyagi (Pat Morris) and this new take on it looks really cool. The more I watch the trailer, the more I can’t wait for the film to be released.
What are you up to these days? I’m pretty tied up with work, mainly new projects for TV. In terms of Sasi the Don, we’re coming up with a lot of rasta-themed merchandise to celebrate my 10 years in music. We have a nice collection of T-shirts, car emblems and stickers.
