ROTF Kick-Starts Awards Season?

And the award for conspicuous excellence in filmmaking goes to ... 'Transformers 2'? Now, we know what you're thinking, but no, they didn't move April Fool's Day, you haven't slipped into an alternate reality and we are not punking you.

As Variety is reporting, the Hollywood Post Alliance announced its fourth annual awards last night and among the winners was none other than 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. While 'Transformers 2' was a wildly popular mainstream hit, grabbing over $400 million at the domestic box office to become the year's biggest earner, it didn't seem to be positioned as an award magnet.

The HPA, however, rewards technical excellence in post production rather than content, explaining Industrial Light and Magic's win for their compositing work on 'Transformers 2'. That thudding techno-mess of a film wasn't the only critical failure to grab awards for technical precision last night; the much hyped disappointment 'Watchmen' also grabbed an award for audio post production.

But proving that post production isn't just the realm of special effects juggernauts, 'Slumdog Millionaire' snuck in one more award win, this time for editing. 'Millionaire' won't be in competition for the Oscars this year since it was honored in last year's ceremony, but the other wins do give 'Transformers 2' and 'Watchmen' a leg up in the race for the Academy's technical categories.

Other winners included 'Julie & Julia' for color grading, with 'Breaking Bad' taking home honor for television editing and 'Fringe' winning the award for television audio.
