Tyrese Talks About ROTF
Tyrese Gibson, singer, actor and co-star of last year’s $700 million-earning blockbuster “Transformers,” spent much of last month in Alamogordo filming parts of the sequel with cast and crew.Holloman Air Force Base, six miles southwest of Alamogordo, was a shooting location for desert scenes in the first flick.
Director Michael Bay and crew liked it enough to return for “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” scheduled for theatrical release June 26, 2009.
Tyrese familiarized himself with the area during both stays, even throwing a wrap-up party for cast, crew and the local public at Inn of the Mt. Gods on Saturday, Sept. 27.
The day before the party we called up Tyrese, who was tight-lipped about the movie but enthusiastic about his stay here.
Q. So why did you decide to throw the wrap-up party?
This is my way of saying thank you to the whole city of Alamogordo, N.M., and to Las Cruces and El Paso. Everywhere we’ve been moving around as a team, we’ve been shown the utmost respect and appreciation and love. This is my way of saying thank you.
Q. What do you think of Alamogordo?
Alamogordo is great, man. We spend a lot of time at the local restaurants – Chili’s, Applebee’s. It’s been the night-to-night routine.
Q. Why did the filmmakers choose Alamogordo?
I really can’t speak for them. As far as I’m concerned, this location is one of a kind. What they’re doing with the sets out here, and the way they make them look especially the way they do, it’s beautiful. I’ve never seen these types of images on film.
Q. What setting is Alamogordo supposed to recreate?
This is Egypt – white sands.
Q. Does much of the movie take place in Egypt?
Pieces of it. I can’t really speak too much more upon it, but the Egypt part of the film is public knowledge.
Q. What can you say about what happens in “Transformers 2”?
I can’t speak on the plot, but I can tell you that it’s way more robots, the stakes are much higher, and there are going to be some things visually that no one in the history of film has done. Michael Bay is in rare form.
Q. How has your role changed from the first film?
I was three ranks down in my Air Force league in the first round, and now I’m master sergeant. I’ve got a lot more to say, a lot more air strikes to bring in. My coms and my cadence is on a whole other level.
Q. Last weekend you were spotted at Sky Bar in Downtown El Paso with your co-star Josh Duhamel (a.k.a. Tad Hamilton, a.k.a. Fergie’s husband). How was that night?
Incredible. I thought the weather was amazing, the club was amazing, and the ladies were beautiful. Plenty of hugs, plenty of good energy. Me and Michael Bay were there and a few guys from the cast. We just had a great time.
