There might be several inches of fresh snow blanketing the Wyoming Valley, but it’s starting to feel like summer in at least one way. The first Transformers: Dark of the Moon figure has arrived in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Not surprisingly, it’s Optimus Prime.
This “Cyberverse-class” Optimus was found today at the Kidder Street Toys R Us for the nominal price of $9.99 (a $2 premium over Hasbro’s suggested retail price).
With a Level 1 Conversion rating (Easy), Optimus transforms in a small-scale big rig truck and comes packaged with a pair of plain-looking snap-on wings.
Labeled as a “Limited Edition Preview Pack”, Optimus also comes with a pair of Autobot-themed 3D glasses and instructions to see “exclusive content” at Hasbro’s official Transformers website. Clearly, this gimmick is intended to cross-promote the movie’s 3D release.
Following the link reveals two elements of the company’s marketing strategy for the franchise’s third big-screen installment:
- Release date for Hasbro’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon merchandise is May 16.
- Using the glasses, consumers can currently look at a picture of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee in 3D on the website, and one new character will be unlocked each week until May 3.
